Power Gone Out? Here’s What to Check First

If you’ve suddenly lost power to part of the house, there are a few things you can safely check before calling:

We can help with:

1. Unplug any appliance you were using when the power went out.

Heaters, kettles, dryers, dishwashers and other high-powered appliances can sometimes cause a circuit to trip.

2. Check your switchboard.

Look for a safety switch or circuit breaker that has moved into the OFF or middle position.

3. If it won’t reset, don’t keep forcing it back on.

A circuit breaker or safety switch that continues to trip is usually telling you there is a fault somewhere on the circuit.

If you have an older switchboard with ceramic fuses, or you notice burning, heat, buzzing or discolouration, leave the switchboard alone and call an electrician.

Call Haven Electrical on 0437 376 562 and we can help work out what’s going on.

We Find the Cause, Not Just Reset the Switch

A tripping circuit or blown fuse can be caused by a number of different problems.

Common faults we find include:

  • Faulty appliances
  • Overloaded circuits
  • Damaged or deteriorated wiring
  • Water entering outdoor lights or powerpoints
  • Pool equipment faults
  • Faulty safety switches or circuit breakers
  • Loose or burnt connections
  • Old ceramic fuse boards
  • Electrical faults following heavy rain
  • Ageing electrical equipment

The important part is working out what caused the problem in the first place

Haven Electrical can test the affected circuit, isolate the fault and explain your options before carrying out repairs.

Circuit Breaker & Safety Switch Replacement

Sometimes the wiring and appliances are fine and the problem is actually inside the switchboard.

Circuit breakers and safety switches can deteriorate over time and eventually fail, nuisance trips or refuse to reset.

We can test the circuit and, where required, replace faulty:

  • Circuit breakers
  • Safety switches / RCDs
  • RCBOs
  • Main switches
  • Switchboard components

If your switchboard contains older Type AC safety switches, ceramic fuses or outdated protection, we can also advise whether upgrading the switchboard would be worthwhile.

Still Have Ceramic Fuses?

A lot of older homes around Bayside and South East Melbourne still have switchboards containing ceramic fuses.

While they may have been suitable when the home was originally built, modern homes use considerably more electrical equipment than they once did.

Older switchboards can also lack the level of safety switch protection provided by a modern switchboard.

A switchboard upgrade can provide:

  • Modern Type A RCBO protection
  • Individual safety protection for circuits
  • Easier fault identification
  • No fuse wire to replace
  • Improved protection against electrical faults
  • Capacity for modern appliances and electrical upgrades
  • The option to add surge protection

If we attend for a blown fuse and your switchboard is getting towards the end of its life, we’ll explain the options and provide a separate quote if an upgrade makes sense.

Add Surge Protection While Upgrading Your Switchboard

If your switchboard is being upgraded, it’s also a good opportunity to install surge protection.

A surge protection device helps protect sensitive electronics and appliances from sudden voltage spikes caused by events such as network disturbances and nearby lightning activity.

Modern homes contain thousands of dollars worth of electronics including TVs, computers, appliances, air conditioners, solar equipment, EV chargers and smart-home devices.

Surge protection provides another layer of protection for this equipment and can usually be incorporated neatly into a modern switchboard.
