Smoke Alarms: What Victorian Homeowners Need To Know

Smoke alarms save lives. They give you the precious early warning needed to get out safely during a fire. Every Victorian homeowner has responsibilities when it comes to smoke alarm installation, maintenance and compliance.

Many homes across Bayside and South East Melbourne still have outdated or poorly positioned alarms that may not work when needed. Here is what you need to know to keep your home and family protected.

1   Victorian Requirements for Smoke Alarms

All Victorian homes must have smoke alarms installed. The basic requirements include:

  Every level of your home must have a smoke alarm — This includes ground floors, upstairs levels and any attic  spaces that are used as living areas.

  Smoke alarms must meet Australian Standards — Alarms must comply with AS 3786. Buying from a reputable brand is strongly recommended.

  Battery alarms are allowed but must be maintained — A 9 volt battery alarm is acceptable, but the battery   must be replaced every year. Dust inside the alarm can reduce sensitivity, so cleaning is also important.

  New homes and major renovations require hard wired smoke alarms — If you are building or renovating,   smoke alarms must be hard wired by a licensed electrician and must include a backup battery.

  Alarms must be located correctly — Poor placement is one of the biggest reasons alarms fail to detect smoke    early.
2  Where Should Smoke Alarms Be Installed

Correct placement makes a huge difference. Here are the key locations:

  • In hallways that connect bedrooms
  • Outside sleeping areas
  • On every level of the home
  • In living spaces
  • Near stairways
  • At least 30 centimetres away from corners and walls
  • Not too close to kitchens or bathrooms to avoid nuisance alarms

For larger homes, you may need several alarms to cover all areas effectively.

3   Ionisation vs Photoelectric Alarms

There are two main types of smoke alarms:

Ionisation

  • More sensitive to fast flaming fires
  • Prone to false alarms near kitchens
  • Becoming less recommended in homes
 

Photoelectric

Recommended
  • Best for detecting slow smouldering fires
  • More reliable for bedrooms, hallways and living areas
  • Recommended by the MFB, CFA and most Australian fire authorities

For most Victorian homes, photoelectric alarms are the safest and most practical choice.

Tips and Recommendations From a Local Electrician

  Replace alarms every 10 years — The sensors inside smoke alarms lose sensitivity over time. Even if they beep during tests, the internal components can deteriorate.

  Test alarms monthly  — Push the test button and make sure the sound is strong and clear.

  Vacuum around the alarm — Dust and insects reduce performance. A quick clean every few months keeps the sensor clear.

  Link your alarms — Interconnected smoke alarms are a major upgrade. When one alarm activates, they all sound. This gives earlier warning if a fire starts on the opposite end of the home.

  Consider hard wired alarms — Hard wired alarms avoid the risk of flat batteries and provide consistent protection. They also include a battery backup.

  Avoid cheap or unknown brands — Lower quality alarms often have poor detection response. Brands that comply with Australian Standards and have long warranties are more reliable.

  Check for proper placement — Alarms too close to air conditioning vents, ceiling fans or bathrooms can react slower to smoke. Correct placement gives you faster detection.
