If you’ve suddenly lost power to part of the house, there are a few things you can safely check before calling:
Heaters, kettles, dryers, dishwashers and other high-powered appliances can sometimes cause a circuit to trip.
Look for a safety switch or circuit breaker that has moved into the OFF or middle position.
A circuit breaker or safety switch that continues to trip is usually telling you there is a fault somewhere on the circuit.
If you have an older switchboard with ceramic fuses, or you notice burning, heat, buzzing or discolouration, leave the switchboard alone and call an electrician.
Call Haven Electrical on 0437 376 562 and we can help work out what’s going on.
A tripping circuit or blown fuse can be caused by a number of different problems.
Common faults we find include:
The important part is working out what caused the problem in the first place
Haven Electrical can test the affected circuit, isolate the fault and explain your options before carrying out repairs.

Circuit breakers and safety switches can deteriorate over time and eventually fail, nuisance trips or refuse to reset.
We can test the circuit and, where required, replace faulty:
If your switchboard contains older Type AC safety switches, ceramic fuses or outdated protection, we can also advise whether upgrading the switchboard would be worthwhile.
A lot of older homes around Bayside and South East Melbourne still have switchboards containing ceramic fuses.
While they may have been suitable when the home was originally built, modern homes use considerably more electrical equipment than they once did.
Older switchboards can also lack the level of safety switch protection provided by a modern switchboard.
A switchboard upgrade can provide:
If we attend for a blown fuse and your switchboard is getting towards the end of its life, we’ll explain the options and provide a separate quote if an upgrade makes sense.
If your switchboard is being upgraded, it’s also a good opportunity to install surge protection.
A surge protection device helps protect sensitive electronics and appliances from sudden voltage spikes caused by events such as network disturbances and nearby lightning activity.
Modern homes contain thousands of dollars worth of electronics including TVs, computers, appliances, air conditioners, solar equipment, EV chargers and smart-home devices.
Surge protection provides another layer of protection for this equipment and can usually be incorporated neatly into a modern switchboard.
